Making Space for Community

Our church campus is at the heart of our ministry, and is, for many, the first connection with visitors from around our community. Let’s be always mindful of how we welcome and love our neighbors who happen to come to our campus.

There are so many things we can do to make our campus and buildings more welcoming. First, is signage. When someone comes to our campus for the first time, do they know where to park, what building to go to, where to drop off kids in child care, etc.? By having thoughtfully well-designed signs, we are actually communicating to the newcomers that they matter to us! Do we ensure that we are accommodating to persons with disabilities? Do our meeting spaces look welcoming and comfortable, or more like an institutional office building? Do we have random posters hanging up in our classroom about old events and ministry programs that are long past their time? Even the posters and signage in our meeting spaces should express that every person on our campus matters and is included.

Do our walls convey who we are through words and photographs, depicting our many vital ministries and activities? For newcomers, it helps further convey what incredible ministry endeavors we support, and that we want to include them in the life and ministry of our church. Even when leaving the church, as we exit the parking lot, we can have a reminder that our “mission field” is right beyond the walls of our church property.
